Oh Me! Oh Life! by Walt Whitman
O me! O life!... of the
questions of these recurring;
Of the endless trains of the faithless--of cities fill'd with the foolish;
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light--of the objects mean--of the struggle ever renew'd;
Of the poor results of all--of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me;
Of the empty and useless years of the rest--with the rest me intertwined;
The question, O me! so sad, recurring--What good amid these, O me, O life?
Answer.
That you are here--that life exists, and identity;
That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse.
JOURNAL: What 'verse' will you contribute to this 'powerful play'?

The Learning Power of Twitter
Check out these two INFOGRAPHICS:
http://www.bitrebels.com/social/the-140-character-fix-twitter-addiction-explained-infographic/
http://www.bitrebels.com/social/the-twitter-environmental-effect-a-unique-doomsday-infographic/
http://www.bitrebels.com/social/a-visual-history-of-twitter-infographic/
A) Explain each of the above INFOGRAPHICS. Write it or come tell me or Ms. P.
B) Take a look at Twitter. Find out through using it, or through researching it (Google etc.) how it can be a powerful learning tool.
1. What could you use it for to learn about? Be specific.
2. What's a hashtag (#) and how does it work on Twitter?
3. How could you be an interactive part of that learning?
4. Could you post your Lord of the Rings Powerpoint on Twitter? What hashtag would you use?
5. Could it be used for school? How?
Let's start a hashtag #psci10eng And then share our powerpoints in there. We can also give our answers to the above questions by tweeting them. Hint. You will have to upload it to the internet in some way (I use gmail) so that you can give us the link.

Current Events- What is MEDIA
Media, in the past, meant NEWSPAPERS, TELEVISION, and RADIO. Today it includes the internet, all advertising from commercials to billboards and ads on the sides of buses.
MEDIA means ALL FORMS OF MASS COMMUNICATION IN SOCIETY.
It's important because it lets us know what is going on in our communities and in the world, and it is the main way we INFLUENCE EACH OTHER. Remember KONY 2012? That is a perfect example of mass influence using mass media.
Here's an INFOGRAPHIC on how people get their news. Each person in the class must be able to explain this INFOGRAPHIC to me:
Social Media and the NEWS
HERE IS YOUR ACTIVITY. YOU WILL BE CONTINUING THIS ACTIVITY FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WHENEVER WE COME TO THE LAB.
Research a current event that is going on in the world today. Some events include: Iran vs. U.S., London Olympics 2012, The Environment, the use of drones for military purpose, African issues (starvation, wars, remember KONY ? etc.), how technology is transforming our societies, the economy- jobs etc.
The event could be local, national or international
1. GO to several online newspapers. Start with HUFFINGTON POST, CBC, THE STAR, and AL JAZEERA.
2. USe the articles, the videos, anything to learn about a current event of your choice. You may have to learn some BACKGROUND to the story in order really understand it.
3. Get your choice approved.
4. Explain the news story to me and plan to follow it using several news websites. Some news stories are good to follow with Twitter.
There are lots more current events that will continue to be in the media in the next few months.
Choose an issue that you know will have updated stories and FOLLOW IT. You can use Google search engine, Twitter or the major media online newspapers such as THE STAR, THE GLOBE AND MAIL. THE GUARDIAN, THE TELEGRAPH, THE NEW YORK TIMES, HUFFINGTON POST, ALJAZEERA, BBC, CBC, RT, CNN...
Your current event must be approved and it must be an news story that will continue to be in the media.

Media and Social Media
You're going to find 3 different current event stories. First, find a LOCAL story, understand it, then tell me about it. LOCAL means Orillia area or Simcoe County area. An example might be about a new garbage dump, or a murder in Oro, etc.
Then find a NATIONAL story, learn about it and report it to me. A NATIONAL story is of interest to all Canadians- a Canada story. A national story might be about politics and Prime Minister Harper.
Finally find a WORLD CURRENT EVENT, learn about it, and report it. A WORLD EVENT is one that matters to all countries. For example an oil spill in the ocean, or the Japan nuclear disaster from last year.

Using Info-Graphics
1. Your job is to find an INFO-GRAPHIC, read it, understand it, and explain it to me. Here are some examples. You may use one of these if you like:
What Happens on the Internet in a Typical Day?
Here's another one:
What is CISPA?
And another:
Social Media's Growing Impact on Relationships
Another:
Air Pollution Around the World
And, again:
Why Social Media is not a Waste of Time
Found another one!!:
Do you know how to use Social Media??
2. Write a journal about a half a page long on the team work of making the bridge on Tuesday. How did it go? What were your team's successes and failures? How was your participation as a group member? What are some other experiences you have had being in a group? Do you enjoy group work or would you rather work alone?

"A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune"
1. What do Angus and the grandfather mean when they say: "I want My Moment"?
2. Consider the movie and real life when answering this question: Why is it so wrong to tease and harass someone because: they are short, or overweight, or from another country, or they talk funny, or they're old, or bald?
3. Compare and contrast the short story and the movie. (show major similarities and differences).
Use Microsoft Word. If you have time, get a G mail account (use your student username ie.john4321). Then you can upload to Google docs and share document with me.

FRIDAY
Hello Everyone,
I hope that you are well.
A) Let's start with a NEW NOTE in Evernote. Call it something like: ENGLISH DEFINITIONS. Let's find a good brief definition that you understand of the following terms:
1. IRONY 2. SUSPENSE 3. THEME
Define each and give an example from "Luke Baldwin's Vow" or some other example that you know. Write your own note for this so that you will remember these definitions better.
B) Now, go to PREZI and try making a short PREZI briefly explaining each of the 6 stages of a short story. Use a famous story such as a fairy tale or other story to use as an example of each of the stages. Include a picture in each stage that best represents that stage.
Please comment on this post letting me know how it went and whether you completed the task or not.
Good job. Have a great weekend.

Computers: Thursday and Friday
Hi Everyone,
Here's what I would like you to do today and tomorrow. We'll go back to the room for reading period because... IT IS GOOD FOR YOU.
1. Create an Evernote account. Watch the video for further understanding. Use your board email preferably. See me if you want to use another email.
2. Once you have a username and password, remember them, or write them down in a word document and keep in your school folder. I bet one of you will forget your username and you can't create a new account with the same email address. Prove me wrong. Find a way to track your usernames and passwords.
3. Create a notebook for English (and your other classes if you so desire)
4. Make a note that has the PLOT GRAPH in it. Use a chart. Make sure you know what the 6 terms of a PLOT GRAPH mean.
5. Next make a new note that supplies the link to this blog.
6. Make another note and put in the link to the Google Presentation called "Celebrate the Short Story"
7. Comment on this post by introducing yourself using your first name and initial and telling me how the above process went. Do you think this could be useful to you? Do you prefer this or using other methods for learning? Have you ever used online tools for GATHERING, ORGANIZING and PRESENTING information?
8. You'll be looking at DELICIOUS, PREZI, and DROPBOX later.
9. Extension. Find a great story or short film that would be good for us to possibly look at in class.

Amazing Science: CERN -- True Story!!
LHC- Large Hadron Collider
Here is the most expensive scientific Laboratory in the history of the world, C.E.R.N. - see website here:
C.E.R.N. Researching how the universe began
Scientists are accelerating and smashing atomic particles and this activity may give them information on how our universe evolved. There are almost 8,000 scientists and engineers representing 600 universities and 113 nationalities.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) lies in a tunnel 600 feet under the ground and stretches in a circle 27 kilometres long (to Coldwater and back?)
And get this: it cost $9 billion! How is that for a story??!! -- non-fiction
What's even better is scientists are using SOCIAL MEDIA to teach about CERN and give updates. Follow them on twitter @CERN
What other social media are they using?
The power of social media for learning what you want.
Welcome to Grade 10 English
What story is this?
We will be using some online resources in this course. If you live in the country and your internet is slow, that's alright because you will have time at school to access these resources.The internet and Web 2.0 (beginning about 5 years ago) gives students some very special learning abilities never before experienced in history.
Students can access the accumulated knowledge of humankind over the last few thousand years. Soon, the Library of Congress will be completely online and accessible (books about everything).
The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, housing millions of books, recordings, photos, maps, manuscripts. They just scanned their 25,000th book recently. They are free and available to anyone.
But it's not just about books. Social media has allowed students to interact with famous scientists, writers, politicians through Skype, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
We can also upload our own videos to Youtube etc. and become teachers ourselves. Offer walkthroughs of video games, or tell stories from your life and offer them to the world.
Not only could we read the novel, Crabbe, but we could Skype the author, William Bell, and ask him a few questions. Or, we could follow an author on Twitter to see what he/she is writing or doing today.
After reading "Crabbe" we could research survival skills in the wilderness, which leads to my next point.
Another use of social media is gathering, organizing and presenting information that you are fascinated in. You will be doing this using some online tools:
(Again, if there are any circumstances that prevent you from doing this, see me.)
http://evernote.com/ A free online notebook for gathering info.
http://delicious.com/ For organizing your links to your information
http://prezi.com/ For presenting your information
Another great online resource is Dropbox. Save your documents in Dropbox and it becomes available everywhere you go- no need for memory stick of failed printer at home.
http://www.dropbox.com/
We will also use Google (Docs). Here is my Google Docs Presentation on Celebrating the Story
Celebrate the Story (Google Presentations)
Also, here is the PLOT GRAPH explaining the structure of a short story that I have on the board in class.
